Peru has more bird species than found in all of North America and Europe combined, including well over 100 endemic species.  It holds the record for the most species found in a single place (650) and for the highest number of species seen in a single day (361).  The Manu Biosphere Reserve has arguably the highest diversity of life anywhere on Earth, making it one of, if not THE, best birding destinations in the world.   With something in the neighborhood of 1800 species (depending on the reference you use), Peru is a birder's dream destination.  Come with us as we take the trip of a lifetime!

Itinerary
Day 1:
Arrive in Lima; transfer to hotel 
Overnight Hotel Faraona (no meals)

Day 2:
A full day of birding alond the Peruvian coast looking for wetland, coastal, and desert specialties like Inca Tern, Humboldt Penguin, Peruvian Booby, Peruvian Pelican, Red-legged and Guanay Cormorants, Surf Cinclodes, Peruvian Thick-Knee, Burrowing Owl, Coastal Miner, Great Grebe, Grassland Yellow-Finch, Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, among many others.

Day 3: After an early morning flight to Cusco, we will explore the Huacarpay Wetlands looking for endemics like Bearded Mountaineer and Rusty-fronted Canastero among typical Andean species such as Andean Lapwing, Puna Ibis, Yellow-winged Blackbird, Cinereous Harrier, Andean Flicker, Giant Hummingbird, Sparkling Violetear, Puna Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail and Streak-throated Thornbird.  In the afternoon we will be transferred to the Ollantaytambo village.

Day 4: Today we will take the train to Aguas Calientes which is the gateway of the famous ruins of Machu Picchu.  We will visit the ruins and do some birding as well, looking for the endemic Inca Wren, Green-and-white Hummingbird, and Masked Fruiteater.  Other possible species include Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper, Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Ocellated Piculet, Golden-naped Tanager, Saffron-crowned Tanager, White-eared Solitaire, Rust-and-yellow Tanager, Slaty Tanager, White-bellied Hummingbird, Gould's Inca, Green Hermit and many others.

Day 5:  Another morning birding around Machu Picchu looking for the Mitred Parakeet, Highland Motmot, Golden-olive Woodpecker, Black-streaked Puffbird, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, Variable Antshrike, Streaked Xenops, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, and others.  Later in the day we will take the train back to Cusco.

Day 6:  We will drive to the lowlands of the Cusco province along the famous Manu Road looking for species like Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Bar-winged Cinclodes, Spot-winged Pigeon, Black-throated Flowerpiercer, Variable Hawk, White-throated Hawk, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Giant Hummingbird, Yellow-billed Tit-tyrant, Slender-billed Miner, Mountain Caracara, Andean Tinamou, the endemic Chestnut-breasted Mountain-finch, Moustached Flowerpiercer, D'Obigny Chat-Tyrant, Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant, Grass-green Tanager, White-browed Conebill, Red-crested Cotinga, Yungas Pygmy-Owl, and others.

Day 7: We will explore the mountains of Manu looking for Red-and-white Antpitta (endemic), Marcapata Spinetail, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Masked Trogan, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Chestnut-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Sword-billed Hummingbird, andean Solitaire, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Mountain Cacique, White-collared jay, Trilling Tapaculo, highland Motmot, and others.  After dinner we will search for the Rufescent Screech-Owl.
Overnight Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge OR Manu Paradise Lodge (BLD)

Day 8: We will visit a well-known Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek where we will have the chance to see the famous Peruvian national bird.  The set of birds around the lodge includes Bay-headed, Paradise, Golden, Spotted, and Magpie Tanagers, Blue Dacnis, Golden-collared Honeycreeper, Versicolored Barbet, and several species of hummingbirds, including Violet-fronted Brilliant, Booted Rack-tail, Peruvian Piedtail (endemic), Wire-crested Thorntail, Speckled Hummingbird, adn many-spotted Hummingbird.

Day 9: Another fulll day of birding aroun the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge may provide looks at Black-and-Chestnut and Solitary Eagles, Yungas and Fiery-capped Manakins, Yellow-rumped Antwren, Ash-browed Spinetail, Chestnut-breasted Wren, Rufous-breasted Antthrush, Dusky-green Oropendola, White-capped Dipper, Plumbeous Pigeon, Golden-headed Quetzal, Blue-banded and Emerald Toucanets, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, and Lanceolated Monklet, among many others.  We will search for Lyre-tailed Nightjar in the evening.
Overnight Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge OR Manu Paradise Lodge (BLD)

Day 10: We will explore the lowest parts of Manu Road looking for birds like Golden-bellied Warbler (endemic),Fine-barred Piculet, Rufous-webbed Brilliant, Scarlet-hooded Barbet, Chestnut-bellied Seed-Finch, Chestnut-bellied Seedeater, Red-billed Scythebill, White-browed Antbird, Chestnut-vented Conebird, and others.
We will be transferred to the rustic but charming Amazonia Lodge where we will stay for three nights.  Here we will look for the impressive Rufous-crested Coquette, Razor-billed Curassow, Band-tailed Manakin, Round-tailed Manakin, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, Lemon-throated Barbet, Masked Crimson Tanager, and others.  At night we will try for both Common and Great Potoos.
Overnight Amazonia Lodge (BLD)

Days 11-12:
On Day 11, we will have a predawn start to look for the Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl and Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl.  During the rest of our stay at Amazonia Lodge, we hope to find many of the specialties of the area, including Bluish-fronted Jacamar, Black-eared Fairy, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Collared Trogon, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Buff-throated Foliage-Gleaner, Goeldi's Antbird, Rufous-fronted Antthrush, Plain-browed Woodcreeper, Lineated and Crimson-crested Woodpeckers, Plumbeous Kite, Manu and Hairy-crested Antbirds, Green Honeycreeper, Scaly-breasted Wren and others.
Overnight Amazonia Lodge (BLD)

Days 13-16:  On Day 13, we will be transferred by boat to the Amazon Manu Lodge where we will spend the next four days looking for species like Peruvian Recurvebill, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, White-cheeked Tody-Tyrant, and several species of Macaw, including Blue-and-Yellow, Red-and-Green, Red-bellied, and Scarlet.  Other species found in the area are Pavonine Quetzal, White-taile, Black-tailed, and Violaceous Trogons, Golden-collared Toucanet, Long-crested Pygmy-Tyrant, Red-billed Pied-Tanager,Plum-throated Cotinga, Cuvier's Toucan, Wedge-billed Woodcreeper, Undulated Tinamou, Bluish-slate Antshrike, Pale-winged Trumpeter, Musician Wren, Chestnut-billed Hookbill, Bamboo Antshrike, Rufous-capped Nunlet, Striolated Puffbird, and many others.  Parrots in the vicinity include Blue-headed and White-bellied.  If we are lucky, we may see the rare and regal Harpy Eagle.
Overnight Amazon Manu Lodge (BLD)

Day 17:  We will spend most of the day traveling by river and land to reach the city of Puerto Maldonado.  During the river journey, it is possible to see White-tailed Kite, Southern Crested Caracara, Southern Lapwing, Wood Stork, Jabiru, Roseate Spoonbill, and Amazon Tern, maong others.

Day 18: Today we will fly to Lima and connect with international flights home.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Deposit of $500 with registration (link for registration form is at the bottom of this page).  Balance due on or before May 20, 2011.

Cancellation policy:
More than 6 months prior to departure – full refund of deposit
Between 4 and 6 months of departure – 50% refund of deposit
Less than 4 months from departure – No refund of deposit
If cancellation occurs after full payment is made, a refund will be given only if the vacant spot is filled.  
           Trip insurance is recommended.
