Overnight Pantanal Mato Grosso Hotel (D)
http://www.hotelmt.com.br/pantanal/
Day 2, July 14: We will begin our day at the hotel's feeders, expecting such birds as Red-crested and Yellow-billed Cardinals, Grayish Saltator, Orange-backed Troupial, and Chestnut-eared Aracari, among others. Following breakfast, we will enjoy a two-hour boat ride on the Pimaim River, targeting all five of the kingfisher species found in South America: Ringed, Amazon, Green, Green-and-Rufous, and Pygmy. We also hope to find Sungrebe and Sunbittern among the many other birds that frequent the river. We will return to the lodge for a quick pit stop before taking a walk that should produce many species including Helmeted Manakin, Red-billed Scythebill, and Pale-crested and Golden-green Woodpeckers. We will take a short break after lunch before setting off in the opposite direction on our afternoon boat ride. We may have chances for Giant River Otter as well as both Agami and Zig-Zag Herons, and we will of course keep a lookout for Jaguars. We'll stay on the river long enough to appreciate the sunset from our boat and to watch Band-tailed and Nacunda Nighthawks. After dinner, we'll take a night drive in search of nocturnal birds such as Scissor-tailed and Spot-tailed Nightjars as well as nocturnal animals such as Crab-eating Fox and Ocellot.
Overnight Pantanal Mato Grosso Hotel (BLD)
Day 3, July 15: We will enjoy the birds at the feeders until breakfast. We will then transfer to Porto Jofre with birding along the way. Scarlet-headed Blackbird, Great Potoo, Cinereous-breasted Spinetail, and Chotoy Spinetail are just a few of the birds we might encounter en route. We will arrive in time for lunch and enjoy a short break as we settle in to our new accommodations. It might be difficult to spend time in your spacious room with resident Hyacinth Macaws demanding your undivided attention! In the afternoon, we will take a boat ride in search of the elusive Jaguar. As we search for this largest of the South American felines, we won't overlook the Black Skimmers, Large-billed and Yellow-billed Terns, Pied and Collared Plovers, or any other birds that can be seen along the sandy banks of the Cuiaba River. We will return to our hotel at the end of the day, hopefully with big smiles on our faces and lots of photographs of Jaguar!

Some of the target species we hope to find among the myriad of avian life are Red-legged Seriema, Pearl Kite, Little Woodpecker, and Campot Suiriri Flycatcher. As the sun gets higher in the sky and the day gets warmer, we will bird in a forest patch where we might find Black-bellied Antwren, Great Rufous Woodcreeper, Straight-billed Woodcreeper, Flavescent Warbler, and Planalto Slaty Antshrike, among many others. This afternoon's walk may produce Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Saffron-billed Sparrow, Hooded Tanagers, and Epaulet Orioles. Finally, we will be transferred by boat to a boardwalk that will take us to a tower facing a nesting area for Roseate Spoonbills. A few of the birds we might see on the boardwalk are Black-backed Donacobious, Unicolored Blackbird, Solitary Cacique, and Mato Grosso Antbird. We will return to the lodge after watching the sunset from the river. Another night drive will provide us opportunities to see some of the nocturnal birds and animals we might have missed on the previous night drive.
